Towards Authoritative Preaching

Authoritative Preaching is the cornerstone of all church growth and ministry (Eph 4: 11-16). It is therefore crucial that this is done as responsibly and as skilfully as possible.

This does not mean eloquence or rhetoric or theatricals. It means preaching God’s Word to his people in an accurate and living way. In a word, it means text-based teaching.

All preaching should be text-based. In other words it must arise directly out of the Biblical text and should be clearly seen to do so. The Bible and only the Bible is our authority as preachers.

To the extent that the message is clearly based on the text of Scripture God will bless and Christians will learn (2 Tim 3:16,17).

The preacher has no right to come with his own agenda. His job is not to read into the text what he would like to be there (eisigesis) but to read out of the text what actually is there (exegesis) and to unpack its meaning and implication for modern living (exposition).
