The Day of The Lord

The expression ‘The Day of the Lord’ appears frequently in the Bible. In the OT God’s people anticipated a Day of the Lord’. They expected a time when God would deliver his people from their enemies and troubles and bring in a time of everlasting blessing and joy for Israel. The Day of the Lord, they believed, was the time when all wickedness and sin would be judged. In this they were right. The shock for Israel was that their was to come upon them a ‘Day of the Lord’ that was a judgement on them. God allowed their sin to go for some time unpunished but a time came when his patience ran out and he came to visit his people in judgement. The exile to Assyria (for the North) and later Babylon (for the South) was Israel’s Day of the Lord. Centuries later they would experience another ‘Day of the Lord’. A time when God would again visit in Judgement because in their sin they had rejected Messiah.

In Isa 13 the ‘Day of the Lord’ is God’s judgement on Babylon. God had used Babylon to judge his people; now he would judge Babylon. The sin of that Great world Empire meant there was a time when God’s patience ran out for her. Isaiah predicts a time when she will be visited in judgement.

There are other nations surrounding Israel that God also visits in judgement. Nations regularly feel they can ignore God and do as they please but for all, sooner or later, there is a ‘Day of the Lord’.

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
