Subordination and the Trinity
Christian worship is unique for it is worship of a God confessed by no other. We proclaim God is one, yet that in some sense he is more than one, he is trinity.
How can God be one yet in some sense three? Christians do not pretend to understand this. They believe it because it is revealed in the Bible. Theologians in the early church grappled with the question and while there may be some truth in the accusation that their theories (thinking) and semantics (language used to express their thinking) may be influenced by the philosophical assumptions of their day (and which of us is free from cultural conditioning) nevertheless church historians agree that the early creeds were a remarkable attempt to express formally, in creedal statements (dogma), the teaching (doctrine) of Scripture on God as Trinity (a theological construct-word that expresses a biblical truth). Orthodox Christian witness and worship was in the beginning and remains today: God in three persons blessed trinity.
The creeds (following Scripture) asserted that God is One (numerically and motivationally) but that this oneness is expressed in three persons (person was a theological construct intended to suggest distinct identity but not individuality). These three ‘persons’ we know in the Bible as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
