Sermon: Rev 4-16 The Interludes
Rev 4 - 16
The Interludes
We saw last week that these chapters describe end-time
events. Events, that immediately precede the coming of
the Lord.
Events, however, that have been seen many times in
history, even the first century Christians experienced
similar events. Jesus said
‘this generation will not pass away until
all these are accomplished’.
In fact each generation of persecuted Christians, or
Christians facing famine or earthquake or disasters can
look out on these cataclysms and take courage from
them that these very troubles they face point to the soon
return of the Lord.
In other words the message of these chapters is that
catastrophe and persecution for the Christian is not a
cause for despair, it is a cause for hope. It is a sign of
the end.
And for one generation it will be the end. These events
described in Revelation will receive their final and most
complete and exact fulfilment and the Lord will return.
We saw too that these chapters are like a drama-script.
God is the playwright and he has given into the hand of
Jesus the task of directing history’s final scene. History
is not random. What happens is not controlled by
powerful men or regimes or governments or even by
malign spiritual forces or the stars - it is controlled by
God. The last act of history will be God’s act. The
finale is his finale. It is a finale which will see the
triumph of good, the triumph of the kingdom of God.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
