Sermon: Rev 3 Sardis

Sardis

Rev 3:1-6

Revelation begins with a vision of the Lord Jesus as the
Sovereign Lord of history and Sovereign Lord of the
church. It is not a comfortable vision. It is an awesome
one , even a terrifying one.

Indeed so intimidating and overwhelming is the risen
reigning Christ that John when he sees him falls at his
feet in a dead faint.

You see the Lord of the Church is not to be trifled with.
Yes he cares for and supports his people. But he is not
a soft mark. Not a patsy who will accept anything and
can be easily duped. Not someone who can be buttered
up by smooth words. He is Lord of his people. A
people he sees with perfect and penetrating vision and
to whom he says with words that brook no argument

I know your works.

Each of the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3 hear
these words. Seven real churches in ancient Turkey but
also seven representative churches. Representative of
Christian churches throughout the whole of history.
Churches like ours to whom the reigning Lord of the
church still says

I know your works.

It is a serious thing to be a Christian church. We are
accountable and however much we are able to pull the
wool over our own eyes and even the eyes of others we
cannot pull the wool over the eyes of the Lord of the
church. We cannot spin-doctor him. He knows the
truth. He sees the reality. He has us fully sussed out.

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
