Sermon: Rev 17 The Scarlet Woman
Rev 17
The Scarlet Woman
We have seen in our studies that Revelation is a
prophecy. The writer John is telling the Christians of
his time of events that in the words of 1:1 ‘must soon
take place’. Events that are part and parcel of the end
of history. These events – increasing evil in the world,
increasing persecution and apostasy of the church,
increasing judgement from God are signs of the end –
an end that John anticipates may well happen in the
lifetime of the Christians to whom John writes.
However, like many OT prophecies, the events of
Revelation while partly fulfilled in part in the lives and
times of C1 believers, were not fulfilled in their
entirety. The final and complete fulfilment lay yet
future.
In fact this is the very essence of how biblical prophecy
works. Prophecy, especially Revelation, invites each
generation of believers to look out on their world and
see the events of their age through the window of the
prophecy - and as we see the parallels between our age
and the events described in Revelation we are
reinforced in the conclusion that the end of history is
near and the Coming of the Lord is at hand. For one
generation perhaps ours these events will be fulfilled in
the most climactic and comprehensive sense – evil will
reach a meridian, the church will come under siege as
never before, it will also compromise with the world as
never before, God’s patience will end and his terrible
anger will finally erupt and the Lord Jesus will return to
deliver his people and judge the world and so history as
we know it will come to an end.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
