Bowls of Wrath
Ch 15,16
We have come tonight to the last of the four series of
‘seven’ judgements in Revelation. We have seen that
John has structured Ch 6-16 around these four sevens.
the seven seals - God’s judgement is revealed
the seven trumpets - God’s judgement is a
warning
the seven thunders - God’s judgement is hidden
the seven bowls - God’s judgement is inevitable
Four ‘sevens’ that are themselves modelled on the four
covenantal judgements recorded in Lev 26.
Judgements which God warned Israel would be the
inevitable consequence of idolatry and disobedience in
the nation. John universalises these judgements, for
now the gospel has gone out into all the world and the
whole world is held responsible if it rejects God’s
covenantal Word and embraces idolatry and
disobedience.
