The Two Beasts


There are two topics considered unsuitable for polite
conversation - politics and religion. John is clearly not
phased by such social niceties for he discusses both in
this chapter.


The beast from, the sea, no-one disagrees is John’s
metaphor for a corrupt State and the beast from the
Earth his metaphor for corrupt religion.


The time of the end, and for John this end-time refers to
the whole era of the Christian church but with specific
reference to the very end, will be a time dominated by
two frightening, hideous, marauding beasts - corrupt
government and corrupt religion.


Paul shows this sense of the end-times still to come yet
in another sense already here clearly in II Thess. 2


Read II Thess. 2:1-8


· The Coming/Day of Lord are one event


· Immediately prior to it Paul envisages a time
he calls ‘the rebellion’.


· It will be spearheaded by a world leader called
‘the Man of lawlessness’ - lawless in the sense
that he is opposed to everything that God is and
approves of.


· Although that time is not now for Paul that
‘spirit of lawlessness’ is already at work.


In the language of John - the beast has arrived but is
still to come. Though that coming, as John constantly
reiterates through Revelation, is near. 1:1
