Sermon: Rev 11: The Witness of the Church

Rev 11

The Witness of the Church

Read Dan 8:27

We are studying in Revelation the insights given to
Jesus, God’s final and complete Prophet about the ‘end
-times’.

What are these end times? Well they are the ‘end
times’ that the OT spoke frequently about. ‘End times’
that arrived in the first Coming of Jesus. For the early
church- in Him and in His Coming the ancient endtimes
prophecies began to be fulfilled. And therefore
for these Christians it was only a matter of time until
the others followed suit.

Daniel in the OT is given a vision of the end-times and
told to seal up his vision for it is for a time yet future,
the end times; but in Revelation the book of end-time
visions in Ch 5,6 is unsealed for the time of the end has
now arrived. There will be ‘no more delay’.

Yet at the same time while Jesus has Come the teaching
of the bible is He is ‘Still to Come’. The future has
arrived but it is still to arrive. It is ‘here now’ but it in
another sense it is ‘not yet’.

And so when we study Revelation we ought to see it as
the early believers would see it. In one sense the events
described in the book have already begun for the last
times have come but their full and final flowering still
lay in the future. C1 Christians believed that future
would be in their lifetime; we should look out on the
world believing it will be ours.

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
