John 3:16


When people were asked what they thought should be
the song for the millennium one of the most popular
answers was the Beatles’ song ‘All you need is Love’.
We rightly value love. We see love as perhaps the most
admirable and most important virtue there is.


Well the Bible agrees. In fact one of the most
important things it wants to tell us about God is that He
loves us.


That is what the verse we read says. Notice the
opening words.


For God so loved the world.


It’s not simply that God loves us but He loves us with
intensity, it is a passionate love. He ‘so’ loves.
Now this is incredible. For, if we are honest, our world
- the world of people that is - is not particularly
loveable.


· it is a world which exploits the weak and
disadvantaged


· it is a world, which abuses children and uses them
for sexual gratification.


· it is a world of greedy people who gorge on luxury
while the vast majority of people are impoverished


· it is a world of religious people who often
hypocritically claim to care, but most of the time,
passes by on the other side.


· it is a tacky shallow world, which reveals its own
tackiness in the smutty programmes it demands for
primetime TV.


Yet this is the kind of world that God loves. He loves
people like us. It is staggering isn’t it?
