Sermon: Job 38-42 The Triumph of Faith

Job 38 – 42

The Triumph of Faith

Now we come to the last of our four brief studies in the
book of Job. A book whose theme, as we have noticed,
is not so much the ‘problem of suffering’ as the
‘triumph of faith.’

Its focus is faith’s reaction, faith’s response to the test
which suffering brings.

Job – the central character in the book/drama – has his
life devastated by a series of personal tragedies: he
loses in one day, in a savage attack by Satan, all the
things in life we must fear losing – he loses his family,
his wealth and possessions and then finally, a little
later, he loses his health too.

All this takes place in the opening two chapters. Then
from chapters 3 – 37 we have a long section of soul
searching anguish as Job tries to come to terms with
what has happened to him.

We saw there the various stages of his grief. We saw
his numbed shock, his dismay, his longing for death,
his anger and depression and we saw particularly his
confusion of mind as Job struggles to understand how
God could possibly allow this to happen to him It is
this above all else that he find difficult to bear. These
tragedies seem to challenge his whole view of God.
How could God be loving and faithful and good and
just and inflict upon him such massively
disproportionate suffering, such apparently purposeless
evil.

The pain he could accept, but that God should inflict it
was beyond his understanding.

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
