Sermon: Job 16 Job’s Torment

Job’s Torment

Job 16

We are continuing our studies in the book of Job. This
chapter we have read is surely one of the most
harrowing and unnerving in the whole of scripture.
It is one of a number of such chapters which give us
insight into the anguish and torment of an oppressed
believer.

Job is suffering at the hands of Satan an almost
intolerable anguish of mind and spirit as a result of a
series of personal catastrophes which God has given
Satan permission to inflict upon him. As we saw last
week, in a matter of moment he lost home, family,
possessions and health – all that is valuable in life – and
now he sits in utter numbed incomprehension outside
the city.

Chapters 3 – 31 describe for us Job’s struggles of faith
and agony of soul as the full reality/scope of what has
happened begins to open up to him.

There are a whole series of battles that Job fights on a
variety of different fronts – not the least being the battle
with the accusation of his friends. They have basically
one message for Job which they speak with one voice
and that is

‘That in life, the righteous prosper and the wicked
suffer. And so as Job is suffering he must be
unrighteous, he must have unconfessed sin in his life.’

Now this kind of accusation that is brought by his
friends is precisely the kind of accusation that Satan
brings upon Christians in times of trouble. He wishes
to add to their grief-guilt.’

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
