Sermon: Habakkuk 2,3
Habakkuk Chapters 2/3
This is the second of two studies in the prophecy of
Habakkuk a prophecy which deals with the whole issue
of doubt and uncertainty in the Christian life. Every
Christian at some time or another has doubts and
questions about their faith. People who don’t I suspect
are either dishonest or don’t see the world as it really is.
There is after all an awful lot in this world that seems on
the face of it to contradict a breezy confidence in God.
There are famines and earthquakes, cancers and
congenital handicaps. There are disasters and wars of a
thousand kinds. There is injustice and exploitation and
greed. Power is strength. So much so that the honest
Christian cannot help but ask the perhaps silent question
- why does a good god who controls the universe allow
it?
Only a blind faith, a cowardly faith that dare not look the
realities of the world in the face can avoid at some point
this question.
We saw last week that these kind of doubts confronted
Habakkuk. The prophecy is an account of his struggle
with how God acts in history. In fact he is the voice of all
the godly in Judah. He is dismayed firstly at God’s
apparent inaction in the face of gross sin and injustice in
Israel. And then he is even more shocked and dismayed
when he learns that god intends to use an even more
sinful and evil nation - the Babylonians - as the
instrument of judgement on Israel. The whole issue
throws Habakkuk into a personal crisis of faith.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
