Sermon: Genesis 1,2 Man in God’s Image
Gen 1,2
Man in the Image of God
We saw last week that Genesis and particularly the
opening chapters are like the overture to a great
symphony. In the overture all the major themes and
movements of the symphony are introduced. Themes
and movements which will be expanded and developed
through the rest of the symphony. Well these opening
chapters of Genesis introduce the great themes and
issues of the bible, indeed of world history.
We saw last week that the principal movement - the
leit-motif - if you like is the greatness and glory of the
creator himself. God is the Creator and everything else
is merely creation.
This week we examine the second great theme that is
introduced and that is - Man.
In Genesis 1 the climax of the chapter and indeed the
climax of creation is the creation of Man. Every other
made thing only has significance to the degree to which
it affects man. The more they impinge, the more is said
of them.
In Gen. 2 we have a parallel account of the creation and
origins of man. The difference between the two lies in
the perspective of the writer. In ch.1 he is concerned
with God in relation to the whole of creation. In Ch. 2
he is more concerned with God in relation to Man. In
Ch 1 do you notice it is ‘Elohim’ who creates, God - the
mighty one. In Ch 2 it is ‘Yahweh’. The Lord God. The
intimate title of God in relationship with man. The
locus of Ch1 is the universe; the locus of Ch 2 is a
garden.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
