Sermon: Elijah at Carmel 1 Kings 18
Elijah 2
Carmel I Kings 18
We have seen the background to this period. Israel was
heading for spiritual disaster. She was selling out to
religious pluralism and the false gods of her age and the
true exclusive God Yahweh was being short- changed.
God sends his prophet Elijah - a man James tells us just
like us - who throws down the gauntlet to Israel and
declares drought for three years in the name of
Yahweh. Three years where drought is itself the only
word from the Lord.
Elijah is sent outside Israel to Sidon. There through a
series of amazing miracles he learns that God is a God
more than able for any situation.
Three years of obscurity to prepare him for this one
event here at Carmel.
Mind you it is no ordinary event.
Today is D-Day. Today the sands of the hour-glass
have run out. The clash between the rival faiths - the
rival ideologies - ‘Yahweh’ and ‘Baal’ has finally come
to a head.
Elijah’s greatness is to focus the issues into one simple
showdown. For 400 years the compromise between
Baal and Yahweh had rumbled on, ever since Israel had
entered the land. Many had learned to live with
compromise comfortably. Even devout believers.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
