Sermon: Elijah and his Chariot 2 Kings 2
Elijah 3
Elijah’s Death
II Kings 2
We come now to the end of our series on Elijah - this
remarkable Man of God who arrived dramatically on
the stage of biblical history and even more dramatically
leaves it. Let’s read the passage together…..
Dying! Death! Not popular words in our late C20
vocabulary. A subject that is as taboo today as sex was
to C19 Victorians.
I suppose I was somewhere in my mid to late teens
when I fully realised that dying was not simply
something that happened to other people but would
happen to me. Sure I knew previously that I would die
but only in these mid-teenage years did it become real
and meaningful. Only then was I aware of it’s shadow
reaching out to me.
I think it is generally about this time that the full
consciousness of our own mortality hits us. And hit it
does. It hits with a blow that is almost physical.
Life is beckoning - fresh, attractive, delightful. So
much to do. So many experiences to savour. So many
mountains to climb, stars to reach. Yet into this
beguiling future suddenly looms the spectre of death.
It casts it’s shadow over life’s brightest day - a shadow
that will never again go away.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
