Sermon: 2 Tim 1:1-7 Christian Leaders for the Last Days

2 Tim 1:1-7

Christian Leaders for Last Days

We are commencing tonight a series of studies on Paul’s
Second letter to Timothy.

The best way to get to grips with what the book is all
about is to read it through yourself and to read it through
in one sitting. Its not hard. It is only four chapters. In
fact, to begin to get a handle on it, you will need to read
it through a number of times. Perhaps we could all
decide to read the whole of 2 Timothy once a day for the
next seven days. I guarantee, if we do this, we will be
well on the way to understanding 2 Timothy.

In fact, I want to recommend reading whole books of the
Bible from beginning to end. Many books are only a few
chapters in length and can easily be read in one sitting.
Start with the NT epistles. Read the shorter ones first
and that will get you in shape to tackle reading the longer
ones. If you must, with the longer ones, read five
chapters one night ….

The traditional; quiet time of reading a few verses and
then some Bible notes is fine. But, it has a grave
weakness. You never really get to grips with the whole
picture. Everything is fragmented and isolated. You are
simply dipping in – a bit like a promise box. To
understand a book, any book, you must see the big
picture before you can really understand the detail.

So, if possible, good homework for us is to read this
letter as a ‘oner’ each day this week. If we all do, I hope,
indeed, I am sure we will agree with the title I have given
to this series of sermons

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
