Sermon: 1 John 1:1-4 A Recall to Fundamentals
A Recall to Fundamentals
1 John 1:1-4
Look at the following list of words... Which words do
you warm to most? I would wager that most of us
warm to the words in the right hand column. The
experience based words. The words on the left, the
doctrine words, our instincts say are boring, stuffy,
irrelevant theory. If we do think like this we are
probably in step with modern Evangelicalism as a
whole.
This is why 1 John is such a fitting book to study. It is
stressing the things that really matter in our faith. It
focuses on the irreducible minimum without which we
cannot say we are Christians at all: those basics from
which as evangelicals we are always in danger of
slipping away.
The NEB entitles the letter ‘A Recall to Fundamentals’.
For John there are three fundamentals
- A commitment to gospel truth
- A commitment to gospel holiness
- A commitment to gospel love

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
