Sermon: 1 Cor 7:1-16

I Cor 7 1-16

Chapter 7 brings us to a new section in Paul’s letter to
the Corinthians, new in the sense that he begins now to
address directly some specific issues the Corinthians
had written to ask his advice on. Not that chapters 1-5
are unrelated to their concerns, in fact they are closely
connected. For in Ch 1-5 Paul addresses the flawed
thinking that is the root cause of all the issues he deals
with from 7 onwards.

Flawed thinking arising from the danger that faces each
generation of Christians, namely, the tendency to adopt
the thinking of our culture and allow it to corrupt
Christian belief and behaviour.

The Corinthians were acutely aware that conversion
meant a radical change. They were now a spiritual
people and wanted to live a spiritual life. The problem
was their idea of what it meant to be spiritual owed
more to the Greek wisdom than it did to the gospel.
The Greeks taught that the spiritual life was a life of
reason and thought. It was pursued with the mind, the
soul. The body was inferior. It was either irrelevant to
spirituality or more likely a positive hindrance. This
notion seemed attractive to the Corinthians. It was
trendy sophisticated thinking.

But it was worldly thinking.

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
