Preaching from Mark

We are about to begin a series of studies on the gospel of Mark. Since a number of us will preach over the series, it is important we establish a sense of continuity and consistency. At the end of the series, the church (and unchurched) should be clear what the ‘big picture’ of Mark is even if they have forgotten the detail. This introduction is intended to help us work in unity though the book.

Firstly some general principles on preaching.

Principles in Preaching

We rejoice in different styles of preaching/teaching. However, we believe that the actual method of study should be fairly uniform. It is the function of the preacher (preaching as part of a series on a biblical book) to be aware of the overall purpose of a book, to remind the audience of this, and to show clearly, through explanation and application, how the text being studied furthers this purpose. This will involve showing what the text meant in its original context and then relating its timeless message to the present.

Sermon structure

Below is a simple structure that we should endeavour to adopt when working through a series. It is not intended to be restrictive. It allows plenty scope for the preacher’s own structure on his message, a structure incidentally that should not be artificial but should reflect the writer’s structure in the text studied.

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
