Guard the Gospel
‘Guard the Gospel’ is the title JRW Stott gave to his BST commentary on 2 Timothy. I guess the commentary is at least 30 years old. Stott wrote at a time when evangelicals had a relatively uniform and apparently stable understanding of the gospel. It is unlikely he foresaw how confused and fragmented evangelicalism would become about the gospel less than a generation later.
On the other hand, perhaps he is not surprised at today’s gospel guddle, since Paul wrote 2 Timothy precisely because the gospel was threatened in the church of the C1. The gospel, for Paul, is a body of truth he calls ‘sound doctrine’, what Jude elsewhere terms, ‘the faith once and for all delivered to the saints’. It is a ‘deposit’ that Paul believes as been entrusted to him by God. Thus, it has been his life work to proclaim it and protect it. His life, however, is nearing its end and Paul is passing to Timothy the responsibility of ‘holding fast’ the gospel he preached.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
