Gospel Holiness

I recently wrote an article arguing that the Mosaic Law (including the Ten Commandments) is not a ‘rule of life’ for Christians. The Law, I endeavoured to demonstrate, was given specifically to Israel; it was a covenant made between God and his redeemed people Israel, at Sinai. As a covenant, it was made neither with gentiles nor with the Christian Church. I argued it is mistaken to impose this Law today on society (as theonomists seek to do) or on the Christian church (as many, though not all, Christians of a reformed flavour, believe appropriate, at least in terms of the Ten Commandments); the believer - even the believing Jew - is free from Law. Indeed this freedom is one of the express purposes of the gospel itself. Paul urges the Galatians, ‘It is for freedom that Christ has set you free. Stand firm therefore do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.’ (Gal 5:1). The ‘yoke of slavery to which he refers is the Mosaic Law whether as a basis for justification or as a means of sanctification.

For some, this message of freedom immediately pushes an anxiety button; surely, such radicalism will lead to people living whatever way they wish. It is antinomian !

About John

Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.

These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
