From Adam to Christ
When we study the Bible, it soon becomes clear that it is the story of two creations. These two creations have two different heads and function on two different principles. The first creation has Adam as its head and is based, because of Adam’s choice, entirely on human responsibility. The second creation has Christ as its head and is based entirely on divine grace.
God views all humanity as belonging to one of these two contrasting and opposing heads; we belong to either Adam or Christ. This contrast may be expressed in a number of ways: nature or grace; old or new creation; two ages; two kingdoms; two cities (Babylon and New Jerusalem); and two covenants (law and grace).
In each case, the behaviour of the one (Adam or Christ) has consequences for the many. Adam’s act of sin resulted in condemnation and death for all united to him: Christ’s act of righteousness (his death) resulted in justification and life for all united to him (Roms 5: 12-20).
We should note that each is united to its head not in his first state, but his second. Adam’s humanity is united to him in his fallen state, not his perfect state: Christ’s humanity (people) is united to him in his heavenly state, not his earthly.
We find ourselves with different relationships and obligations depending on whether we are in Adam or Christ.

About John
Hi there - I am a member of Greenview and have been for over 20 years. For a number of these years I functioned as an elder, however, indifferent health forced me to take more of a back seat. I see this as an opportunity to do a little writing, often focussing on issues that are a matter of evangelical debate today. Naturally the views expressed are my own and may not reflect the views of the elders or church at large, though differences are likely to be in the detail and not the substance.
These articles and sermons were written partly to clarify my own thoughts and partly with the intention of provoking thought in others who may read them. If you read one I hope you find it stimulating. Please feel free to give me feedback or discuss my articles in the forums.
