A Gospel for Homosexuals

People who are homosexually inclined in our society are often extremely hostile to Christianity, especially to orthodox and traditional Christianity which in upholding the message of the NT teaches that a homosexual lifestyle is not acceptable to God. This hostility is in some respects understandable since for homosexual people (as for heterosexual people) their sexuality is very close to the heart of who they believe they are.

As society has promoted homosexuality as a moral equivalent to heterosexuality Christians have felt it necessary to protest and make clear this is in conflict with Christian teaching. This is understandable and appropriate. However, my concern is that the Christian message becomes perceived as a mere moral code that is negative and condemning. The media seem happy to collude in such a caricature.

But the Christian gospel is not merely a moral code – in fact the opposite is true; it is a message of salvation (forgiveness, deliverance and hope) for people who cannot live up to a moral code – whether God’s, society’s or their own. It is this that makes it gospel (good news).
